While the pandemic emptied the Health Sciences Library’s physical classrooms of students, it didn't impede learning opportunities. Our librarians easily shifted their teaching and consulting to web conferencing technologies and now, after working to train UVA Health staff and faculty on Zoom and other platforms, the Library’s Information Technology team is expanding its online teaching.

In order to better serve patrons remotely, we have created technology-related classes that we hope will be helpful. Examples of these new classes are described below and can be discovered by visiting the Library calendar.

GIS
Class Title: “Creating and Consuming GIS Data with Open Source”

Does your research (or that of your department) create or consume GIS or mapping data? Are you interested in building Python apps with tools like Jupyter or Streamlit? Do you have questions and need help in finding online resources from tools like OpenStreetMap or census.gov data sets? Our department provides hands-on support with open source tools like QGIS to get you up to speed with zero start-up costs.

Video Production

Class Title: “Video Production for Marketing”

Learn how to create a video marketing strategy by setting video goals, targeting your audience, and storyboarding your concept. We will walk you through the planning stages of pre-production to post-production (editing).

Class Title: “Video Production for Clinical Training”

Learn how to incorporate clinical training videos into procedures and processes to deliver engaging content that is easier to follow and remember. Clinical training videos allow on-demand access at the convenience of busy learners.

Accessibility Classes/Sessions

Beginning in Spring semester, the Library’s Systems and Application Developer, Anson Parker, will offer classes and/or “open hours” on the subject of managing accessibility of digital content. Anson is a UVA and community leader in digital accessibility and passionate about sharing his accessibility knowledge and experience with others. Classes will be posted on the Library’s event calendar.
