Many of our patrons know that our librarians offer consultations on topics such as literature searches, data science, and reputation management, but it might surprise them to know that those consultations average 1,500 per year.

Further surprising might be the fact that, along with the librarians' cutting-edge research support services, the Library's Information Technology Team provides consultations to patrons on a variety of topics, such as:

  • Video production- our video production expert performs over 100 video production consults per year, helping both academic and hospital patrons to produce videos for clinical training, research presentations, academic training, patient education, grant proposals and much more: https://guides.hsl.virginia.edu/video-documentation
  • Data support- the IT Team supports and participates in the Library’s Research and Data Services Department's data science consults and classes. Visit https://guides.hsl.virginia.edu/data/workshops to learn more about workshops that will be available in 2020, including new GIS and Python Jupyter notebook assistance.
  • Conferencing technology- the team has provided in-house support for over 70 web-based conference calls so far this year.

Recent IT Team achievements include:
  • Providing technical advice and support for Interventional Radiology’s “Patient Anxiety” study utilizing 360-video and VR technology.

If you think that our technical skills and experience might benefit your research, education, or clinical work, please request a consult at https://guides.hsl.virginia.edu/consultation-request . The IT team would love to hear from you.

On January 6
th, 2020, the Department of Historical Collections at the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library will alter its schedule. The change reflects Historical Collections’ commitment to its mission, says Dan Cavanaugh, Alvin V. and Nancy Baird Curator of Historical Collections:

“Making the collection accessible to members of the Health System and to the wider community will remain a priority; however, as we’ve redirected our collection focus from general health sciences history to the more specific history of the UVA Health System, we’ve realized that the work necessary for building and maintaining this collection requires an increase in the time dedicated to it.”
Noting that requests for class visits have increased over the past several years, Cavanaugh also said that the schedule change will allow for strengthening Historical Collections’ instructional offerings.

Chang
ing the opening time from 8:30 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. will meet staff needs, while also continuing to provide in-person access to the community.
