Borrowing Materials from the Library:

Q: Can we use the hallway outside the Library?
A: The Link Alcove, just outside the entrance on the second floor of the Health Sciences Library at UVA, is a welcoming space designed to help UVA Health teams share their resources and services with the broader UVA Health community. For UVA Health affiliated groups requesting the space to host a bake sale, please click on UVA Health policy links for fundraising and solicitations. We’re happy to accommodate occasional use of the space, and while we do consider repeat reservations, those are handled on a case-by-case basis. You can book up to two months in advance, so feel free to plan ahead!
Q: Do you have any group study/meeting rooms?
A: At the Health Sciences Library, we’ve got a variety of study spaces to support how you work best. Whether you're meeting with a class, hosting a small conference, or just need a quiet spot to focus, our group study rooms are here for you. A reservation system is in place for rooms on the first floor to balance the need for group facilities with that of regular study spaces. To reserve a room, please click on https://guides.hsl.virginia.edu/hsl-spaces.
Q: When is the After Hours Study Area available, and who has access to it?
A: Most areas of the Library are open after hours for anyone affiliated with UVA Health. Just bring your UVA Health ID, as it's your key to swipe in through the Library’s main entrance. We’re glad to have you here, anytime you need us.
Q: Do you have a public bulletin board where I can post this notice?
A: If your notice is related to a Health System event, feel free to drop it off at the Service Desk. We’ll be happy to post it in the display case near the main entrance, as long as there’s space available.
Q: Do you validate parking tickets?
A: Parking receipts can be validated at the department or hospital floor you’re visiting. On weekends, you’re welcome to park for free in the 11th Street garage. Please note that there isn’t special parking set aside for Library use.
Q: Is there a book drop for the Health Sciences Library?
A: Yes. There is a wall-mounted book drop in the corridor outside the Library. It's labelled Library Depository.
Q: Do you have a lost & found area?
A: The Service Desk has a designated space for holding lost/found items for a limited time. Service Desk staff will be happy to check the area for you anytime an item is reported missing. Personal possessions found in the Library, the corridor outside the Library, or the patio on the lower level, may be turned in at the Service Desk.
Q: How do I get into the library from Jefferson Park Avenue?
A: For security reasons, the Health System keeps the door at the bottom of the stairs near the library locked. Only folks with Health System IDs can use that entrance.
During regular business hours, the easiest way to get to the Health Sciences Library is through either the West Complex front entrance or the University Hospital Lobby—both are open and wheelchair accessible.
If you have a UVA ID (but not a Health System one), you can always access the Library via Pinn Hall’s Jefferson Park Avenue entrance, no matter the time.
Q: Do I need a special card to be able to borrow from the Health Sciences Library?
A: Residents of Virginia 16 years of age and older may borrow books from the HSL by presenting a valid Virginia driver's license or other state of Virginia issued photo ID at checkout. Students at Virginia colleges and universities may also check out books with their valid student ID. Only UVa affiliates may check out journals, and only Health System affiliates may check out equipment. Please see our User Eligibility Policy for details, or call the Service Desk at (434) 924-5444 if you have questions.
Q: How can I print or photocopy in the Library?
A: UVA uses the PaperCut system for printing and copying, managed by UVA Print. The primary payment method is Cavalier Advantage, a debit-style account linked to your UVA ID card.
Credit Card Payments
- You can add funds to your Cavalier Advantage account using a credit card via this secure portal.
- The minimum credit card load is $27.
- These funds can also be used at UVA dining locations and other campus services.
Card Setup
- The first time you use a printer, you’ll need to tap your UVA ID card on the reader and log in with your computing ID and Eservices password to associate your card with the system
- This is a one-time setup unless you use a different printer that hasn’t stored your credentials.
Printing Methods
You can print using:
- Email: Send your file to
hoosprinting@printme.com
and use the code you receive to release the job at a PrintMe station. - Web Upload: Go to www.printme.com, upload your file, and use the code provided.

Q: I need an article from a journal, or a book, that we don't have here. How do I go about getting it?
A: If you're part of the Health System—whether you're faculty, staff, or a student—you can request materials we don’t own using the ILLiad online system. It’s easy to access right from the Library’s homepage, so you can place requests whether you’re here in the Library, working from your office, or off-grounds.
Q: Your catalog says the journal I need is at Ivy Stacks. Where would I find it?
A: The journal you need is located in our remote storage facility on Ivy Road. You may obtain it by submitting a request via ILLiad. Circulating items may be checked out or used for photocopying. Items designated "RARE" do not circulate, and must be used by prior arrangement with the Library's Historical Collections Department (434-982-0576).
Q: May I return books from other UVa libraries at the Health Sciences Library?
A: Yes. The items will be checked in and placed in transit to their destination library.
Q: How can I put books on Reserve in the Library for my class?
A: Reserve requests for books may be made electronically by using our Reserve Request form.
Q: Does HSL have a notary public on staff?
A: Yes, the notary public is generally available Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 3:00pm. No appointments necessary, but please call ahead at (434)-924-5444 to ensure availability. This is a free service.
Q: In cleaning out my office, I've found lots of journal issues and some books that I'd like to give to the Library. Shall I just bring them in and drop them off at the Library Service Desk?
A: While the Library appreciates the opportunity to be offered gifts of books and journals, limited space does not allow us to accept donations that we cannot use. Before bringing items to the Library as donations, please contact Lewis Savarese at lms9qw@virginia.edu, so that a determination can be made as to whether we need the items in our collection or not.
Q: How can I ask the Library to purchase a particular book or to subscribe to a certain journal?
Please use our Purchase Request form. Once you submit the form, our Collection Development Department will review it and make a decision. You'll be notified as to the outcome. If the item you recommend is a book, your name will be listed on the order as the first person to notify once the item is available.
