On December 1st, 2023, the Health Sciences Library co-sponsored a holiday study break for students. The annual event took place in the Library lobby, which had been festively decorated by library staff, and included snacks, seasonal beverages such as cider and hot chocolate, and centered around appearances by therapy dogs who regularly work at UVA Health!

“This (event) will be but one aspect of Karen’s lasting legacy"
It also marked the last day in the library for Karen Knight, Medical Education Librarian, who is retiring at the end of the month following 28 years of service. Karen shared that she was touched by the love and thoughtfulness of the medical students and enjoyed sharing stories with current and former students. The therapy dog study break was originally created by Karen, and Dan Wilson, HSL's Deputy Director, said he thought it fitting that this year's took place on her last day in the Library.
Wilson is certain that the December study break will continue in the future, as it is always well received by the students and the therapy dogs alike. “This will be but one aspect of Karen’s lasting legacy,” he added.
Library staff now look forward to May 2024, when HSL will sponsor its second annual Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Study Break.
