We’re thrilled to introduce our new School of Medicine Librarian, Allison Cruise. Allison has a Master of Library & Information Studies from UNC Greensboro and a Bachelor of Science in psychology from UNC Chapel Hill. She started her library career at the nonprofit NCBiotech before being selected for the National Library of Medicine Associate Fellowship Program. In the second year of the NLM fellowship, she lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico and worked at the University of New Mexico’s Health Sciences Library & Informatics Center. While there, she collaborated with her preceptor Melissa Rethlefsen to complete a published scoping review entitled Academic Health Science Libraries’ Outreach and Engagement with North American Indigenous Communities. In her spare time, Allison enjoys reading fantasy novels, playing video games, thrifting, and sewing.

We’re delighted to have Allison on board as she prepares for the new class of medical students. Her dedication to student success and community engagement will undoubtedly enrich our library and the School of Medicine.

You can reach out to Allison at cruise@virginia.edu.

The Health Sciences Library is excited to announce that it will launch its newly-redesigned website on August 5, 2024!

Preview the newly-redesigned website at this link: https://guides.hsl.virginia.edu/dev-home

The launch will signal the end of a months-long process that involved a team of library staff and testing from over 50 users.

Team co-lead, HSL Web Developer Anson Parker, said, "The team has done solid work on this project, giving many hours of their time to ensure that the new site will enable our users easy access to resources and services."

The team's other co-lead, Librarian for Belonging & Community Engagement Kimberley Barker, added,"We're so grateful to the HSL users who participated in our user testing events. Their feedback really helped us deliver a much better product for everyone."

The library's website serves as a digital front door, connecting our patrons to world-class resources and services. I want to express my gratitude to Anson, Kimberley, our marketing team, the patrons who tested our site, and all library staff who contributed to the success of this project.

- Bart Ragon, Director, Claude Moore Health Sciences Library

Parker and Barker thanked the HSL Executive Team for its support, and also praised the work of Kris Celeste and Nelson Tumpap del Rosario (CACS) for their work on the project.

"They were a pleasure to work with," Barker said, with Parker adding, "They met all of the project deadlines, which was a huge part of our success. We're glad to be delivering the project on-time and on-budget!"

Your access to journal articles has just improved: LibKey Nomad is now available on all Medical Center computers, providing one-click access to UVA Library-licensed journals. This saves an average of 2 minutes per journal article accessed which based on current PubMed traffic amounts to over 800 work hours saved per year.

If you are using your personal computer you will need to download and install LibKey Nomad from the vendor's website, located at https://ThirdIron.com. If you are using a UVA Health computer you already have it as LibKey Nomad was installed by UVA Health IT in partnership with the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library. To take advantage of LibKey Nomad, use the Microsoft Edge browser on a Medical Center-owned computer. Search PubMed for an article title, author, or topic. From the results, you will now see the LibKey Nomad Download PDF button, as well as a link to the journal issue:

The LibKey Nomad browser extension is available for Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Brave, Safari, and Vivaldi, and can be downloaded from ThirdIron’s website.  Once the extension has been added, you will be asked to select an institution. Select “University of Virginia.” Information regarding ThirdIron’s privacy policy is available at their website.

David Martin, PhD, a Clinical Data Research Specialist at the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library, recently graduated from the first-ever cohort of the UVA Health Leadership Institute (HLI).

Launched in July 2023, the HLI aims to nurture leadership skills across all health system entities, regardless of career stage. Out of 250 applicants, David was one of just 33 selected for this transformative experience.

David’s group capstone project involved interviewing both internal and external stakeholders to explore opportunities and obstacles related to UVA Health’s pursuit of innovation leadership.  Based on these interviews, they identified a need to propose the establishment a Center for Innovation within UVA Health, which would serve as a hub for developing strategies and fostering partnerships.  His team presented their capstone project during a celebratory reception held in the Dome Room of the Rotunda on June 12th.

So, here’s to you, David! Congratulations on your achievement!
