User Eligibility & Access

Policy

The Claude Moore Health Sciences Library (HSL) provides access to biomedical information to support the education, research, patient care, and public service programs of the University of Virginia.  The Library also is a biomedical resource to the local community, the Commonwealth, and the nation.  The following categories determine eligibility for access to the Health Sciences Library's facilities and services. 

UVA Health Affiliates

Faculty, staff, and students of the UVA Health System, including:

  • School of Medicine
  • School of Nursing
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • UVA Hospital
  • Students enrolled in UVA Health education programs such as Radiation Technology and Nutrition

These users are identified by a UVA Health badge and a UVA Computing ID.

Users in this category are eligible for the full array of Library services, including (but not limited to):

Non-Paid Faculty and Preceptors

Faculty with official, ongoing appointments in the School of Medicine or School of Nursing

Users in this category are eligible for:

UVA Affiliates

Other University faculty, staff, and students not described above

Users in this category are eligible for:

Students Performing Clinical Rotations

Students in programs at Piedmont Virginia Community College, Blue Ridge Community College, and James Madison University who have clinical nursing rotations at the Health System. Also includes visiting medical students. These students are identified by a UVA Health badge noting their affiliation.

Users in this category are eligible for:

Visiting Faculty and Researchers

Individuals who have a short-term affiliation with a UVA Health department

Users in this category are eligible for:

Area Health Professionals and UVA Community Health

Health professionals who are not officially affiliated with UVA but reside in Charlottesville or the surrounding counties of Albemarle, Augusta, Buckingham, Culpeper, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Nelson, and Orange. "Health professional" generally refers to those individuals who are licensed to provide health care services to patients including, but not limited to, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, health care administrators, mental health care workers, social workers, respiratory care technicians, and laboratory technicians.  This category also applies to UVA Community Health employees in Culpeper, Haymarket, and Prince Wiliam.

Users in this category are eligible for:

  • Onsite access to Library computers and electronic resources for the specific purpose of finding health information
  • Borrowing privileges for Library books and journals
  • Research services not to exceed 30 minutes of staff time

UVA Alumni

Graduates of UVA degree programs

Users in this category are eligible for:

Retired UVA Health Faculty

Individuals who have retired from the University of Virginia

Users in this category are eligible for:

Biotechnology Companies

Companies in the region whose primary emphasis is in the fields of biotechnology or biomedicine

Users in this category are eligible for:

  • Borrowing privileges for books
  • NOTE: The Eligibility Policy of the Health Sciences Library varies slightly from those of the University Library System. Questions regarding eligibility status should be referred to the Library Service Desk at 434-924-5444.

UVA Health Patients and Family / General Public

UVA Health patients, patient families, citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia, including health professionals outside the parameters identified as Area Health Professionals, all business and professional services (for-profit and not-for-profit), and contractual employees of the Health System
