Allied Health

Policy and Rationale

The Claude Moore Health Sciences Library (HSL) provides access to health sciences information to support the education, research, patient care, and public service programs of the University of Virginia Health System. The Library also serves as a health sciences information resource for the University at large, the local community, the Commonwealth, and the nation.

User Categories

The following categories determine eligibility for access to the Health Sciences Library's facilities and services. Access reflects the relationship of the user to the primary mission of the UVA Health System; resources available to provide and sustain a given level of service; and the Library's responsibility to ensure high-level service to primary clientele.

Health System Affiliates

Faculty, staff, and students of the UVA Health System, including:

  • School of Medicine faculty, staff, and students

  • School of Nursing faculty, staff, and students

  • Health Services Foundation faculty, staff, and students

  • Biomedical Engineering faculty, staff, and students

  • Health System employees (physicians, nurses, residents, fellows, pharmacists, administrative staff, allied health personnel, etc.)

  • Students enrolled in Health System education programs such as Radiation Technology and Nutrition

 

These users are identified by a Health System badge and a UVA Computing ID as listed in the whois database, noting their affiliation.

Users in this category are eligible for the full array of Library services, including (but not limited to):

Non-Paid Faculty and Preceptors

Faculty with official, ongoing appointments in the School of Medicine or School of Nursing

Users in this category are eligible for:

UVA Affiliates

Other University faculty, staff, and students not described above

Users in this category are eligible for:

Students Performing Clinical Rotations

Students in programs at Piedmont Virginia Community College, Blue Ridge Community College, and James Madison University who have clinical nursing rotations at the Health System. Also includes visiting medical students. These students are identified by a Health System badge noting their affiliation.

Users in this category are eligible for:

Visiting Faculty and Researchers

Individuals who have a short-term affiliation with a Health System department

Users in this category are eligible for:

Local Area Health Professional

Health professionals who are not officially affiliated with UVA but reside in Charlottesville or the surrounding counties of Albemarle, Augusta, Buckingham, Culpeper, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Nelson, and Orange. Includes Loansome Doc(R) affiliates with the Health Sciences Library. NOTE: "Health professional" generally refers to those individuals who are licensed to provide health care services to patients. It includes, but is not limited to, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, health care administrators, mental health care workers, social workers, respiratory care technicians, and laboratory technicians.

Alumni

Graduates of UVA degree programs

Users in this category are eligible for:

Retired Health System Faculty Members

Individuals who have retired from the University of Virginia

Users in this category are eligible for:

General Public

Citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia, including health professionals outside the parameters identified as Local Area Health Professionals, all business and professional services (for-profit and not-for-profit), and contractual employees of the Health System

Users in this category are eligible for:

Biotechnology Companies

Companies in the region whose primary emphasis is in the fields of biotechnology or biomedicine

Users in this category are eligible for:

  • Borrowing privileges for books
  • Loansome Doc(R) service for photocopies of materials from the Library's collections only. Charges for Loansome Doc(R) will apply
  • Access to Historical Collections and Services (may require appointment)
  • NOTE: The Eligibility Policy of the Health Sciences Library varies slightly from those of the University Library System. Questions regarding eligibility status should be referred to the Library Service Desk at 434-924-5444.
