The Health Sciences Library was pleased to inaugurate its first Pause & Learn on November 8, 2023. Pause & Learn is an series whose purpose it is to connect Library users and resource representatives so that users can learn how to make the most of HSL's subscriptions.

Pause & Learn is NOT, Lewis Savarese wants you to know, a sales pitch.

Lewis is HSL’s new Electronic Resources Librarian and the person behind the Pause & Learn series. About it he said, “I want to make sure that users know, when they see me in the Link with a stranger advertising a resource, that no one is trying to sell them anything. These are resources that are already paid for, and the representative is there to answer any questions and offer tips.”

He had the idea, he said, when reviewing both resource usage statistics and their cost (after employee salaries, resource subscription costs account for the bulk of HSL’s spending), and, as Lewis said, “Funding the Library demonstrates the trust that UVA Health, our users, and the taxpayers of Virginia have in us; therefore, I believe that we should do all that we can to ensure that users get the most out of our resources.”

Lewis’s, supervisor, Deputy Director Dan Wilson, agreed, and the planning began.

Matt Scalabrino , a McGraw-Hill representative, was HSL’s first Pause & Learn guest, and he came specifically to discuss AccessMedicine, an online resource which contains 85+ medical textbooks (including Harrison's Online, Current Medical Diagnosis & Treatment, and  Schwartz’s Principles of Surgery), drug monographs, multimedia examination and procedural videos, and study tools, including flash cards and review questions.

If you missed the Pause & Learn and you have questions about either it or AccessMedicine, reach out to Lewis. He’d also like to hear from you if there’s a particular resource representative that you’d like for him to invite for a future Pause & Learn (which, for now, will be an irregular series).
Do you have other questions or opinions about any of HSL’s electronic resources? If so, Lewis looks forward to hearing from you.
