Update: February 21, 2022

We are pleased to announce that funding has been secured to renew our institutional Sciwheel/Faculty Opinions license for another year, effective March 2022.  As a result, current Sciwheel users will see no disruption in service and will not need to explore personal or departmental subscriptions.

We have notified UVA Procurement and they support us renewing the subscription.

Please contact Dan Wilson, Assoc. Dir. for Collections & Library Services, at danwilson@virginia.edu if you have any questions.

Update: February 11, 2022

Dear Health Sciences Library users:

Due to budgetary constraints, our license to Sciwheel and Faculty Opinions (formerly F1000) will end on March 31, 2022. We apologize for any inconvenience that this cancellation creates, but, with our budget having been reduced by almost 23%, we must prioritize content purchases (such as journals and books) over other, less Library mission-focused, products.

Sciwheel does offer the following departmental and individual accounts:

Departmental Pricing

No of Accounts $ price

0 to 5 $390

6 to 10 $624

11 to 20 $1,092

21 to 30 $1365

31 to 40 $1706.25

A departmental license requires a list of named users. Access is by user email and password. Users can be replaced by new users at any time, so long as they remain within the licensed number of accounts.

For more information departmental pricing, please contact Brad Swecker at Brad.Swecker@sciencenow.com.

Individual Pricing

Individual accounts at $9.95/month. Student individual accounts are priced at $4.95/month.

Free Account

If you chose not to purchase a departmental or individual license, your account will convert to the free version once the license expires, which means the following:

§ You will retain access to all projects, references, notes, tags etc. that you have already (you keep access to shared projects too, unless you or another member deletes you from the project)

§ You can still use the site and tools (browser extension, Word/GDocs plugins) as normal apart from the restrictions listed below:

§ You will only be allowed to create up to 3 projects (if you’ve already created 3 or more then you won’t be able to create any more, but you can rename an existing project, or delete projects so you have less than 3, which will allow you to create new ones)

§ You can only send a max of 3 invitations per shared project

§ You will no longer receive article suggestions in the site, and smart citation suggestions in Word/GDocs. If you want to keep using the full version of Sciwheel, you can purchase an individual subscription at $9.95/month (student rate is $4.95/month).

Update: February 9, 2022

If you are a registered SciWheel user through the Health Sciences Library then you received an email today in which SciWheel stated, "As you may know, University of Virginia will not renew their institutional subscription in March 2022. We know you and over 200 others remain active users at UVA, but unfortunately the librarians felt there was not enough demand to justify a renewal."

The Library assures you that the cancellation was in fact prompted by budgetary constraints (as stated below in the original post) and not because we felt that the product wasn't in demand. Making cuts is a difficult but necessary part of the collections management process and we assure you that each decision is made thoughtfully and guided by our intention to serve you as best we can; reserving funds to provide access to journals, books, and databases must be our priority.

If you have questions, please contact Dan Wilson, Associate Director for Collections & Library Services.
