The UVA Postdoc Association's Diversity and Community Outreach Committee in partnership with the UVA Health Sciences Library's IDEA (Inclusion Diversity, Equity, Accessibility) Committee invite you to join our JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) Reading Group and become a JEDI member. This group is open to all UVA community members, i.e. individuals from all fields of study across all levels of training and positions. We select books and lead discussions centered on discrimination and inequity from various perspectives (as it pertains to race, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, ableism, and beyond). We focus on these issues from a global standpoint in an effort to understand our role in directing change as global citizens. Past books we've read include: Freedom is a Constant Struggle by Angela Davis, which focuses on global social movements for justice and change, and Inferior by Angela Saini, which addresses inequality towards women stemming from historically biased scientific research and how recent research is changing the conversation.

Our next book is Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, which centers on indigenous knowledge of nature. This book will soon be available at the UVA Health Sciences Library as they grow their collection through this collaboration. We will meet on Thursday, May 5th at 4:00 PM, IN PERSON at the UVA Amphitheater and ONLINE at https://virginia.zoom.us/j/96982588741?pwd=L0J1UmhrY1E0eitWMllpNWxQYmlXQT09 to discuss this book. A rain location will be announced closer to the date should there be rain in the forecast. Snacks will be provided at the meeting.

Please feel free to still join us for the discussion even if you cannot complete the book by the meeting time. The books we select are meant to serve as a resource for launching discussion, and thus, completing the reading is not necessary for participation in this group. We value your perspectives on each topic regardless.

To learn more about the group, receive updates, and start connecting with fellow JEDI's, please join our Slack HERE. Please feel free to reach out to Megan Sayyad at mrs7yz@virginia.edu if you have any questions. We look forward to chatting with you in May!
