During Women’s History Month, HSL celebrates women in healthcare and the biomedical sciences, across all gender identities and roles, as they work towards better health results for every patient. Women account for 38% of active physicians in the United States, and account for almost 90% of the U.S. nursing workforce. Yet globally, women hold only a quarter of healthcare leadership positions – and only 15.3% of U.S. health systems had a woman as CEO as of 2021. The number of women physicians does continue to grow, and as of 2019, 50.5% of medical students in the United States were women. However, issues like major income disparities between women and male physicians reflect continuing issues with equality for women in healthcare.
We need women in healthcare.
