This painting by Pierre Aristide Brouillet, entitled A Clinical Lesson at the Salpetriere, depicts a fictional scene in which the 19th century French neurologist, Jean-Martin Charcot, is delivering a lecture at the Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital in Paris.
The assessment of neurological function is best accomplished systematically. We recommend a head to toe approach beginning with the mental status exam followed by assessment of cranial nerve function and then strength, DTRs, and sensation peripherally in sequence.
In this section we have included videos relevant to the various aspects of the neurologic exam, as well as a group of articles relevated to the mental status exam and the assessment of cognitive impairment.
