Publication Impact Services

We provide expert consultations to UVA Health System faculty, departments, and groups (including SOM and SON) on measuring your scholarship through bibliometrics, "alternative" metrics, and visualization. From a list of PMIDs, a topic, or an author id (e.g ORCID), we can help you:

  • demonstrate impact of published works for promotion and tenure using Web of Science/JCR data
  • measure or assess research impact through "altmetrics"
  • manage or track publications, e.g. through an ORCID profile
  • maintain an impactful online identity

Report Types:

Individual Department School

Times Cited, Categories, and Rank data from Web of Science/Journal Citation Reports. For P&T candidates, we provide a report in order of your CV's publications.

Impact via total publications, times cited, impact factors, citing journals, citing institutions, h-index, etc. from a provided set of citation data (e.g. PMIDs)

Visualize publication strengths and gaps in topical areas or disciplines from a provided set of citation data (e.g. PMIDs)

Public impact of your work beyond academia via "altmetrics" (e.g. mentions in news or social media)

Finding Publication-related Metrics

Refer to this table for common metrics and tools to assess the impact of your scholarly works.

Name Description Fee/Free Links
Times Cited Number of times a work (e.g. an article) has been referenced, typically by other scholarly works Fee (available to UVA affiliates via library subscription)

Use Web of Science and these instructions to find Times Cited.

Overton is a good source to find citation metrics for policy papers.

Impact Factor

The journal Impact Factor is the average number of times a journal's articles have been cited, over the previous two years.

For example, the 2022 Impact Factor for a journal is equal to citations in 2022 to items published in that journal in 2020 and 2021, divided by the number of items published by that journal in 2020 and 2021

Fee (available to UVA affiliates via library subscription) Use Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and these instructions to find Impact Factors
h-index A measure of both the productivity and impact of the published work of an individual scientist or scholar through a simple formula: h (a number) is equal to the point at which a scholar's h papers have each been cited at least h times Free Can be self-calculated, but Web of Science (see instructions) or a Google Scholar Profile has this measure, based on the publications covered by each source
Altmetric.com

Measures "alternative" metrics such as page views, downloads, blog postings, and tweets. Individual researchers can get a monthly subscription
