Library Orientation for Nursing Students

The Claude Moore Health Sciences Library is your main library at UVA. Located at 1350 Jefferson Park Avenue, the Health Sciences Library (HSL) licenses journals, books, databases, and more. While some resources are available in print, most of our resources are electronic and are available whether you’re working on Grounds or off Grounds.

As a UVA student, you also have access to the entire University of Virginia online holdings, including over 1.1 million eBooks, 395,000 journals, and 1022 databases.

The library’s staffed hours are 8 AM-5 PM Monday-Friday, but library access is available 24/7 to you with your UVA Health ID badge.

Our School of Nursing library guide includes links to our most-used nursing databases, tutorials on how to search specific databases and use the Zotero citation manager, and much more.

Off-Grounds Access

Our electronic library resources are licensed for your use and are available to you both on and off Grounds. When accessing from off Grounds, you’ll need to navigate to resources directly from the links on our library websites or utilize the UVA Anywhere VPN to ensure that you can access our subscription resources.

Liaison Librarian

Amanda Datesman is your School of Nursing liaison librarian. Amanda is available for virtual or in-person library consultations in support of your nursing research. You can reach her directly at or book an in-person or virtual appointment.

Research & Software

Browzine allows you to keep on top of the latest journal articles. Check out this video demonstration (2 minutes).

Zotero is our preferred citation management tool. This application collects, manages, and helps you cite your research sources.

Download Zotero and install the connector extension for your browser. Learn more about getting started with Zotero here.

Virgo is our library’s catalog. Looking for books, eBooks, journals, or other resources in the library’s collections? Learn more about how to search Virgo here.

Electronic Journals

Search our collection of eBooks and eJournals.

LibKey Nomad

We recommend that you download Libkey Nomad. Libkey Nomad is a browser extension that offers links to PDFs while browsing certain pages such as PubMed, WOS, publisher websites, and Wikipedia. If LibKey Nomad cannot find the article, you will be brought to a page where you can submit the citation to our interlibrary loan service.

Interlibrary Loan Service (ILL)

Looking for an article from a journal that we don’t subscribe to? Submit an interlibrary loan request and be notified via email when a PDF of your requested article is available.

Covidence is a user-friendly review management system that streamlines the literature review process. Whether you’re doing a literature review or undertaking a systematic review, Covidence can help.
